Further evidence has emerged that Apple is planning one of the biggest iPhone camera upgrades yet.
Apple’s new 48-megapixel camera is expected to enable 8K video recording modes on the iPhone 14 as well as the ability to switch between 12-megapixel and 48-megapixel modes, depending on lighting conditions. The 12-megapixel mode trades resolution for improved light-gathering ability in low-light scenarios, whereas the 48-megapixel mode can provide higher-resolution pictures in well-lit scenarios as well as helping to improve the quality of digital zoom.
The periscopic telephoto lens, on the other hand, is likely to more than triple the iPhone’s maximum optical telephoto capability from 3x to around 10x. This will finally close the gap between Apple’s flagship smartphones and the best of the Android-based competition which currently outperform iPhones in this key area.
