at all. Despite the long hours of practice, the training, the injuries that rival the ones football players incur, and the sheer physicality of cheerleading, it’s often ridiculed and disrespected. People still wonder, is cheer a sport at all? With Netflix’s, the sport finally gained respect in the public eye as people realized just how much skill it takes to execute at the highest levels.
It was the thudding bodies that brought me back to the mat. That distinct, skin-on-skin smack of a small girl twisting into your arms after you’ve thrown her with all your might roused how the litany of bruises peppering my arms and shoulder looked. It brought back the glory of cheerleading. It’s unfortunate, but this kind of injury was always my selling point to prove that cheerleading was a sport.
This assessment isn’t wrong. It’s important that we scrutinize anyone or thing that puts people’s bodies on the line. But the obsession with injury inis no different from what we see when we watch any kind of game. And that's what I, unfortunately, took from the barrage of pain: cheerleading is finally being discussed unquestionably as a sport. And that’s likely thanks to its brutality being exposed.
