Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had to be fitted with a pacemaker and would be discharged from the hospital in time for a key vote on a controversial bill to reform the judiciary
JERUSALEM, July 23 - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was "doing excellently" after an overnight hospitalisation and vowed to be in parliament on Monday to vote for a disputed judicial reform that triggered a fresh round of mass protests on Sunday.
Monday will see the beginning of voting in parliament to ratify the first of a package of reforms in Netanyahu's highly contested, which has ignited months of nationwide protests and concern abroad for Israel's democracy. Netanyahu's coalition with a clutch of nationalist and religious parties has been determined to push ahead with plans that would curb the Supreme Court's power to overrule government actions on legal grounds, arguing that the court has become too politically interventionist.
The crisis has spread to the military, with hundreds of volunteer army reservists threatening not to show up for service if the government continues with the plans, and former military and security chiefs warning that national security was at risk. "If we don’t have a strong and united defence force, if Israel's best do not serve in the IDF, we will no longer be able to exist as a country in the region," Halevi wrote.
