Over the past month, vaccinations have largely stalled in the state. That troubles health experts, who believe vaccines will be the most effective strategy in ending the pandemic.

REUTERS/David 'Dee' DelgadoAmong adult Virginians who haven’t rolled up their sleeves for a poke from a coronavirus vaccine, 87% say they don’t plan to get one, a new statewide poll shows.
The findings were part of a survey conducted in June by Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy, involving 800 registered Virginia voters. The poll covered a variety of health topics and was commissioned by the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association. In the survey, those who said they were unvaccinated and didn’t plan to get immunized offered many reasons: About 28% said they were worried the vaccines could cause other health problems; 22% said they had doubts about the health threat posed by COVID-19; and 18% said they had doubts about vaccines in general.
Kaiser Family Foundation has been studying vaccine hesitance and found demographic differences between the wait-and-see and definitely-not camps. About 40% of those waiting were minorities, and those who said they definitely won’t get a shot were 65% white. Partisanship also seemed to play a role, with 58% of the definitely-not group identifying as Republican or Republican-leaning.
