Almost 300 Harris County defendants were ordered to be released from jail due to a computer system glitch that prevented those inmates from going before a magistrate before the state-mandated time frame.

This file photo from November 2021 shows an inmate at the Harris County Jail at 701 Baker Street in Houston.

Generally, defendants are not to be held for processing for more than 24 hours in misdemeanor cases and 48 hours for felonies, according to the Texas Code for Criminal Procedure. Records of the extensions were not available on the Harris County District Clerk’s Office website and were provided to the Chronicle by other county government agencies.
