The install sizes for new games are getting out of control, with basketball game NBA 2K24 beating the already massive Starfield.
The primary benefit of downloading video game games, instead of buying physical copies, is that you’ve got quick access to multiple titles without ever having to leave your seat, but at the rate file sizes are increasing it’s becoming ever more impractical.
The bigger the download the less individual games you have to hand, unless you start investing in multiple hard drives. But that may be a necessity if you happen to be a fan of both basketball and space exploration.but NBA 2K24 is also out this week and it comes out at a staggering 161.4GB, and that’s without the inevitable day one patch.
Given it’s a sports game, that’s going to be constantly updated, the file size for NBA 2K24 will inevitably balloon over time and it’s likely to reach 200GB or more by the end of the year – after all the same thing happened to NBA 2K23, which started at 152GB. Call Of Duty suffers from the same problem but because Warzone is persistent, and doesn’t get superseded by a new game every year, it’s even worse, with the PC install starting at 175GB and only going up from there.
Quite why NBA 2K24 is so big is a bit of a mystery, as it’s three times bigger than FIFA 23 and most other sports titles. It’s likely a result of its story campaign, which is something FIFA hasn’t had for a few years now and EA Sports FC 24 doesn’t have either.
