The overwhelming majority of these people were uprooted by hurricanes, floods, then fires and tornados. Nearly 40% percent returned to their homes within a week. Nearly 16% percent have not returned and 12% percent were evacuated for more than 6 months.

“These are all things that we take for granted in a modern society,” Gerrard added. “Its absence is deeply disruptive to physical and emotional health as well as to child development.” According to the data, adults who identify as LGBTQ were disproportionately affected — 4% of LGBTQIA+ adults had to leave their homes compared to 1.2% of straight, cisgender people.
