About 30 Alabama high schoolers have been selected so far as National Merit Scholarship winners, an honor granted to students with exceptionally high test scores and impressive service and leadership experience.Although the National Merit Scholarship Competition underwrites more than a quarter of the scholarships with its own funds, most awards are provided by independent sponsor organizations.
This year’s first batch of Alabama winners include 10 students who attend private schools and one homeschooler. Of the 23 public school winners, five attend a high school with a magnet program. Most expressed interest in science and math fields. One thing to keep in mind: The program said it does not measure the quality or effectiveness of education within a school, system or state, and it cautions against comparing high schools based on how many National Merit winners they have.Ryan Furlong, Thompson High School – National Merit $2,500 Scholarship*Andrew C.
