🔴 National Grid warns of three-hour blackouts this winter and will pay people to use energy off-peak
Britons could face rolling three-hour blackouts this winter under a worst case scenario if energy imports run out, the National Grid has warned.
Prime Minister Liz Truss said the UK has “good energy supplies” and “can get through winter” but she could not guarantee there would not be forced outages. It insisted that a gas shortage was “unlikely” but even if gas supplies are adequate, household electricity supplies could be at risk if temperatures plummet, there is not enough wind or if there are no power imports from mainland Europe.
In a bid to avoid blackouts, National Grid is ready to deploy five coal-fired power plants, which can generate up to 2 gigawatts of power, after securing deals worth hundreds of millions with firms including Drax, EDF and Uniper “We are confident in our plans to protect households and businesses in the full range of scenarios this winter, in light of Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine.
