, was more than just a place to shop for Michael Denzer and his family. The sprawling outdoor outlet mall — touted as the first of its kind in the nation — was a destination.
Now, the deserted outlet mall is in its final days as the property’s redeveloper prepares the Hunterdon County site for demolition. A housing development, a park and a new town hall will take its place. “You didn’t just go there for the outlet shopping. You went for the day to go to Flemington,” Armstrong said.
Tour buses would bring people in from out of state to shop at the name-brand outlets, which promised less expensive merchandise than the shops in regular malls. “People weren’t shopping at it,” former Flemington Mayor Betsy Driver said late last year, as the remaining stores had their final days open for business. “The stores have been closing, the retail market has been changing and it’s now basically a ghost town.”
George Vallone, the designated redeveloper for Liberty Village, plans to transform the mostly-abandoned outlet mall into multi-income housing units.Namdar Realty Group, a New-York based commercial real estate investment firm, purchased the property from Simon Property Group for $2.7 million in 2019. It was valued at $5.8 million in 2018, just a year prior.
