Recent polls show some warning signs for Republican frontrunner Daniel Davis, rather than the resounding victory his supporters think.
In truth, for all the bile they’ve spilled these last sorry months, the churlish campaigns of Cumber and Davis bear more similarities than either might care to concede, and contained within Cumber’s fall is a cautionary tale the de facto Republican frontrunner ought to take to heart.
That has created for Davis a personal contradiction he has yet to reconcile: would-be bridge builder waging a grinding land war. “We’re consistently ranked in the top 10 places to get a job or start a business. You should be excited about that.” Recent electoral history and the power of money alone guarantee Davis the clearest shot of becoming the next mayor, something no recent events have changed, but his campaign was unmistakably caught flat footed by the resilience of someone widely assumed to be a second tier candidate — Al Ferraro, the deeply conservative City Council member — and, I believe, by Davis’ own lackluster showing in polling so far.
The donors who have funded this mess — that is, the ones who aren’t doing it for obviously self-serving economic motivations— ought to ask themselves what better causes the millions they plopped into the laps of the two best-funded Republican mayoral candidates could have benefitted instead.
