NASA: Once-in-a-decade asteroid to pass near Earth on Saturday
Astronomers will get a rare, close look at a large asteroid getting a little too close for comfort to Earth this weekend.reports an asteroid between 140 and 310 feet in diameter will pass at around 100,000 miles away on Saturday. This will put the asteroid, named 2023 DZ2, closer to Earth than the moon.
An asteroid of this size passing close to Earth is a rare occurrence, happening only about once a decade, NASA says. NASA scientists first noticed the asteroid headed in the direction of Earth on Jan. 14. And earlier this month, the space agency thought it might be potentially hazardous. But as of Tuesday, NASA has removed that warning.
The best time to spot the asteroid in the sky, with a 6-inch telescope or larger, will be early Friday evening looking in the southeast. Then on Saturday, the asteroid is expected to be the closest to Earth at 2:51 p.m.
