NASA and other space agencies are next week preparing for scenarios where Earth is struck by an asteroid. It’s all part of a bigger plan, part of which involves using a spacecraft to impact one, hopefully deflecting its course.

Administrator Jim Bridenstine will deliver the conference’s keynote address, while Bill Nye, chief executive officer of The Planetary Society, will participate in a panel discussion about defending Earth from asteroids. That will stream live on Wednesday, May 1, 2019Impact craters like Manicouagan in Quebec, Canada, are rare, but NASA, other U.S. agencies and international partners are gathering to simulate impact scenarios and discuss the best course of action for disaster mitigation.

Schematic of the DART mission shows the impact on the moonlet of asteroid Didymos. Post-impact observations from Earth-based optical telescopes and planetary radar would, in turn, measure the change in the moonlet’s orbit about the parent body. The simulated emergency exercise will include NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office , the European Space Agency’s Space Situational Awareness-NEO Segment and the International Asteroid Warning Network .
