The youngest American female to summit the 50 highest peaks in the United States will ascend the highest mountain in the world this spring on her quest to complete the Explorers Grand Slam.

The Explorers Grand Slam really wasn’t on the radar for the Naperville 18-year-old a year ago because Westlake said she was focused on climbing Denali in Alaska, the final piece she needed to set a new 50-state record.Graduating a semester early from Naperville North High School opened a world of possibilities for Westlake, who will run cross country on scholarship for the University of Southern California in the fall.

“Girls don’t feel they belong in the mountains because they don’t see anyone like themselves there,” she said. “The mountains belong to everyone, and the lessons learned in them build strength, confidence, adaptability and resilience — skills that young girls in our world need.”
