One year after Naperville was hit by the strongest tornado it’s experienced in 110 years, 22 homes remain in disrepair and the city continues to evaluate what it should to do prepare for a future natural disaster.
A total of 231 structures in Naperville were severely damaged, 19 of which were deemed uninhabitable by the city’s Transportation, Engineering and Development department. Another 143 had major damage and 68 minor damage.
“We have learned that these other types of disasters require a longer-term focus for the residential areas that have been affected,” LaCloche said. “We’ve seen various stages of reconstruction happening and sometimes things were happening and then they would come to a stop because they were waiting for windows,” LaCloche said. “It seems like it’s loosened up a little bit more and there’s more activity out there.”As of this week, the city was tracking 22 permits for houses and eight homes received certificates of occupancy, she said.
One of the outcomes of the training was to conduct a survey six months after the storm and an open house in December to get a baseline of where residents were, LaCloche said. The city, however, was able to identify someone who had a temporary housing situation that was about to run out. When the city found out the Lisle Township assessor was giving property tax relief to those whose houses were uninhabitable, the city had contacts for residents who would benefit, she said.
