'Our hair culture relates to the pride and strength of the Jamaican people and the Jamaican diaspora. They’re trendsetters and they know it.'

Shot in both London and Jamaica, it's a window into the world of Caribbean glamour. As well as being a celebration of Jamaican flair, the photography project illuminates the many extraordinary details of everyday people. "'Tallawah' means 'be strong and fearless,'” says the 28-year-old Ijewere. “These are strong women, some with their own stories of struggle, but the way that they hold themselves, the way they express themselves is so inspiring.

It's clear that Ijewere recognizes the responsibility of being an image-maker. "I often see negative connotations of Jamaicans," she says, explaining the importance of subverting the white gaze through empowering photography, adding, “I approach any project which is looking at culture and identity differently to other shoots because I always think, think, and think again on how I am documenting them. Throughout history, so many cultures have been mistreated, misrepresented.
