The NAACP Houston, TX Youth Council Unit #6820, open to those up to age 25, held the virtual event Sunday in partnership with the UH Juvenile and Children's Advocacy Project of Texas to teach students how to handle law enforcement interactions and how to build stronger relationships with police. Roberts began with some quick “dos” and “don’ts.” Do stay calm, be respectful and keep hands visible. In most cases, hopefully, the officer will be respectful back. Don’t argue, run or reach for anything suddenly. If a police officer’s lights show up in the rearview mirror, the student should pull over in a well-lit area. Turn on a light inside the vehicle, get out their license and insurance card, and put both hands on the steering wheel.
Officers are permitted to pat down clothes if they suspect there could be a weapon, Roberts said, but they will generally need a warrant to search the vehicle . Students do not have to give officers consent to search if there isn’t a warrant. Officers cannot delete the students’ photos or videos, and they need a warrant to go through their phone to see those images. However, police can stop activities that interfere with their investigation. So it’s best to keep some distance while filming.
