New York Gov. Kathy Hochul proposed banning fossil fuel infrastructure, including lines that power gas stoves and furnaces, in smaller new residential buildings by 2025 and larger ones by 2028.
, New York’s electricity demands in winters could be dramatically higher if all home heating, hot water, and cooking was done with electricity. A quick transition could also lead to a shortage in electricity in the winter months, similar to the risk of blackouts that New Yorkers sometimes fear during the summer when air conditioners are running.
New York state estimates that over the next few decades electricity generation and transmission capacity will have to double to meet the growing demand driven by electrification of cars, home heating and other appliances, but the AGA predicts it would require quadrupling capacity to meet demand on the coldest days.
