The Holmdel Planning Board this week voted to recommend to the Township Committee that a portion of Crawford Hill be deemed a condemnation area in need of redevelopment. And now the township committee has on the agenda for its Sept. 12 meetingA representative for Phillips Preiss Grygiel Leheny Hughes LLC, Kate Keller, presented the findings from a township-funded study to the Planning Board that looked only at Lot 7 — an 8.4 acre portion of the 42-acre Crawford Hill property.
The 42-acre property, which contains the Horn Antenna, a national historic landmark that confirmed the Big Bang,Residents’ groups Citizens for Informed Land Use, Friends of Holmdel Open Space and Preserve Holmdel started a Joseph Grather, an attorney for Crawford Hill Holdings, the owner of the property, told the Planning Board that if they “took the handcuffs off the zoning, the property would have a tenant.”
“Besides the expert witnesses, residents at the meeting shared that the ... former Nokia building that is on the site is in good condition and does not pose any detriment or harm to the community. Yet, the town wants to condemn it.”“We don’t need development or redevelopment, but rather, reuse,” said Ralph Blumenthal. “Since December, we and others have advocated for the preservation of all three lots as a park with public access.
