“This is not an isolated incident,” DeVito said. “This land is just being torn up with off-road vehicle here in a wetlands. This is just rampant all over the Pine Barrens. Habitat is being destroyed by people going in circles, driving up and down hills until they erode into just piles of sand. And I can show you literally hundreds of these scattered throughout the Pine Barrens where the land is being destroyed each and every day.

The Pinelands is comprised of forests, wetlands, farms and towns. About half, or 480,500 acres, has been permanently protected so far.

The DEP, which has enforcement power, has not formally adopted the map and has a limited budget to patrol such a vast area.
