Chuck Muth, a former executive at Coca-Cola, grew up in Paterson.
. On Monday, the Paterson kid who started with Coca-Cola by driving a truck gave something back to his hometown: a $5 million donation to his alma mater, Montclair State University, that will be used to create a museum to Negro League Baseball at Hinchliffe Stadium.
"I felt an obligation to the city," Chuck Muth said of the $5 million he had donated to the restoration of Hinchcliffe Stadium in his hometown, Paterson. At Coca-Cola, Muth worked his way up from route salesman to district manager and ultimately to senior vice president. He also served as vice president of the Joseph E. Seagram’s global non-alcoholic beverage unit. He currently is active as a consultant in the food and beverage industry, working with number of companies that make organic products, among them, Vive Organics, and Partake Foods, according to a biography compiled by Montclair State.
Hinchcliffe Stadium was first opened in 1932 to serve Paterson’s public schools. But over time it took on an historic role as host to Negro League baseball in the years before 1947 when first Jackie Robinson, and then Larry Doby, broke the color line in Major League Baseball. Hinchliffe fell into disrepair and was closed in 1997. For 25 years the historic stadium lay empty, a crumbling relic of a bygone era, until Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh and the city council cobbled together a plan to revive it. Besides a refurbished stadium and a museum, that plan includes 74 units of housing and a parking deck. The project, which is due to be complete in the spring, has been funded almost entirely through $109 million in state tax credits.
