A man was arrested Wednesday on allegations that he transferred cryptocurrency in identity theft operations on the dark web, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
Charles Vera, 30, of Dumont, was charged with financial facilitation of money laundering, a second-degree crime, prosecutors said. Detectives started investigating the movement of funds, including cryptocurrency, to multiple dark web sites specializing in the sale of personal identifying information in September 2022, officials said.
Investigators alleged Vera was transferring funds in support of dark web activities for a fee and communicating with various individuals from fraud groups, authorities said. Vera was arrested Wednesday following a court-authorized search of his Dumont apartment. He was released on his own recognizance pending a future court date.
