Mystics Coach Eric Thibault was a bit perturbed Friday night after his team failed to complete a rally in the home finale against the Atlanta Dream. The typically insightful first-year coach was curt during his postgame media session after an 80-75 loss that solidified Washington as the No. 7 playoff seed.Now Thibault has a decision to make. The regular season ends Sunday in New York and he could rest key players on a roster that has weathered injuries all summer.
The Dream led 42-35 at halftime, but a third-quarter outburst from Brittney Sykes left the Mystics trailing by one going into the final 10 minutes. Atlanta responded with a 12-0 run to take a 13-point lead and never trailed the rest of the way, hitting its free throws down the stretch to keep the Mystics at bay.
“My buckets come pretty fast and in a flow,” Sykes said. “So that was just a little spurt that I had. Shout out to my teammates. They found me, I found the rhythm, and I just took it personal that I wasn’t being aggressive enough for my team. And I just had to keep the mentality of just keep going.” “Defensive lapses, not being able to rebound,” Delle Donne said. “They’re ... too good to give them that many chances. So I think that was the biggest thing, with our defense, struggling to finish the plays.”Injuries
