Eventually, he opened up to me. My heart broke listening to him. I urged him to slow down but he insisted he had no choice. I sent him for tests but he couldn’t take the time off work to attend them. He had a heart attack shortly afterwards and devastatingly, he passed away.
Every year, we see a sharp rise in the number of hospital admissions and deaths in the winter months, particularly among more vulnerable groups. This always places a huge strain on the NHS, but this year those pressures are peaking earlier. Cold living conditions can also affect the heart and blood vessels, especially for those more vulnerable or with pre-existing chronic health problems. Untreated high blood pressure over a prolonged period of time is a risk factor for strokes and heart attacks. I worry that we will see a rise in these conditions, as a result of many people being unable to afford adequate heating or nutritious meals.
Ultimately the stress takes its toll on our health. Lethargy, burnout, depression and anxiety, headaches, mouth ulcers, gut issues – the effect of poverty on health is multi-system.
