Malcolm Forbes: A never-ending adventure
Over 36 years as editor-in-chief, Malcolm Forbes turned his family's small publishing company into a world-famous brand, one redolent of power, entrepreneurship and wealth. On the occasion of his 100th birthday, we're publishing a series of articles about him and the very rich world he created and lived in.in many ways, but the side of him I enjoyed most was his sense of humor. He loved to laugh and to make people laugh, a gift that is one of life’s most magic spices.
He was many things – boss, bon vivant, raconteur, balloonist, columnist, happiest millionaire, leader of the pack,, mentor, friend, super-this, mega-that; father, grandfather, father-in-law, uncle, cousin, and ever the sparkling naughty boy. While he played hard and thrilled to the publicity he garnered biking and ballooning and throwing big parties, he was also a tireless worker. At heart, he was a craftsman of words, a true master of the English language.
And the epigrams were everywhere. As fortunes in cookies, collected in books, or appearing on cocktail napkins and cushions. Here are some of his own, and some given to him by friends.“If you can’t take it with you, I’m not going.”“If the dinner check’s delayed, try leaving.” I’ve been with him when he pulled that one. It works.“When you are old enough for no one to say not to eat all the sweets you want to, you do.
• For instilling in me a thrill for a rainy day and especially a summer storm full of house-shuddering lightning and thunder. For giving me a joy of the sea and boats both bathtub-size and ocean going. For the collecting bug and a passion for history, and for the utmost importance of dessert, especially ice cream.
