The two\u002Dyear pilot project will see three community safety officers trained and working in each of the two communities.

Chief Ava Bear has continued the work started by former chief Herman Crain and Whitecap Dakota First Nation Chief Darcy Bear to launch the project, which officially began on April 1, funded by the federal and provincial governments.

The Muskoday community has a security program in place, but the guards can only call RCMP if they see something, unlike CSOs, who can carry pepper spray and batons and respond to low-risk incidents. “We’re hoping that it’s going to enhance community safety overall. It’ll be more people, more eyes in the neighbourhood and the total goal is to just enhance community safety,” she said.Article content

CSOs have been in place throughout rural and urban municipalities for years; as the program evolved, First Nations leaders and communities identified a need for it in their communities, the ministry said.
