Another sad ending.

Last Thursday, the legislature voted to neuter the state’s election watchdog. Murphy is going to sign it because what’s a second term as governor without a naked power grab? Why not? it’s not like you have to run again. Might as well leave a little gift for the party on your way out the door.

The New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission, or ELEC, is in charge of ensuring state elections are on the up and up. The nonpartisan commission makes sure candidates adhere to all the various and sundry rules around campaign finance, dark money contributions, etc. ELEC is already a relatively weak regulator and the latest move by Murphy and the Dems will yank what few remaining teeth it had.

It cuts the statute of limitations for bringing campaign charges from 10 to 2 years, and wouldn’t you know it, that would help a bunch of folks in Democratic leadership with cases pending. What a coincidence.

This is one of those classic sleazy, under the radar moves controlling parties pull all too often. Nobody pays attention to ELEC, but that doesn’t mean their job isn’t important. Independent governmental commissions with at least a modicum of enforcement power are all too rare, and this move by the Democrats puts another on the endangered list.
