A radar-confirmed tornado touched down near Georgetown, Delaware Saturday evening and a tornado watch for the entire Philadelphia region and most of New Jersey is in effect until 10 p.m. Saturday.
Severe storms tripped through the Philly region Saturday night, setting off multiple tornado warnings and at least one radar-confirmed twister, the National Weather Service said.
That confirmed tornado touched down near Georgetown, Del., the weather service said, and it was following by three more radar-indicated warnings for portions of Philly and Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Burlington, Mercer, and New Castle Counties.for the entire Philadelphia region and most of New Jersey in effect until 10 p.m. Saturday.
A tornado warning went up for New Castle and southwestern Chester Counties at 6:33 p.m. after radar identified a thunderstorm “capable of producing a tornado,” a third warning went out for parts of Bucks, Burlington, and Mercer Counties.A severe thunderstorm warning covered an extensive area in southeastern Pennsylvania, northern Delaware, and New Jersey counties along the Delaware River until 7:30 p.m.
Wind gusts to 50 mph and strong thunderstorms were forecast to continue into Saturday evening, with the approach of a powerful front attached to the storm that has spawned tornadoes and has been blamed for at least 11 deaths in the Midwest and South. A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect for parts of Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery Counties until 7 p.m.
