Under NHS screening, cervical samples taken during smear tests are examined for human papillomavirus (HPV).

Around 13 high-risk types of HPV cause 99.7 per cent of cervical cancersOnly 12 per cent of women fully understand cervical screening and the vital testing that goes with it, a charity has warned.

The latter refers to a group of viruses that can be transmitted through sexual contact but do not cause issues in most people.Under NHS screening, cervical samples taken during smear tests are examined for HPV. A poll by YouGov for King’s College London found only around one in eight could identify how HPV testing is used.
