More than what's on paper: Support is key paid gradsoflife
As a kid, I was convinced I had all the answers. I did not like school, tests or homework. I cut class, snuck out of the house, even tried to run away from home. My mom raised triplets on her own and worked the graveyard shift as a Nurse’s Assistant – all while attending classes to become a nurse. She was always busy and did all she could to keep me on track in school. Unfortunately, I cared more about being popular than I did about my classes.
I wanted to continue my education and get my Bachelor’s but I could not afford it. I was heartbroken, again unsure of what to do next. It was at that time that my sister told me about this program her fiancé had joined. The program paid him to learn and provided him with an internship, all of which sounded exciting to me. The program wasOnce I joined Year Up, I found out that I loved IT. I became bilingual, learning the languages of tech and business.
Like my mom before me, I am working full-time, raising my son, and will be pursuing my Bachelor’s Degree at Southern New Hampshire University. I also serve on the board of Year Up’s Alumni Association and continue to build a strong, supportive network of people who push me to find my life’s answers. Looking to the future, I see myself as an entrepreneur, one who leads an organization that improves the financial literacy of young adults.
