“The first thing I look at when the NFL schedule is released every April is for the September games,” Sham said. “I don’t look for the opponents. I want to see if I there are any game times that conflict with the High Holy Days.” This will mark only the third time in his 41 seasons in the Cowboys booth, interrupted in the 1990s by a three-year stint with the Texas Rangers, that Sham has missed a game.
This time, Dallas resident Ted Emrich, an up and comer in the ESPN universe whose Louisiana-native late father served as the public address announcer for Cowboys home games, will work the Saints game at the Superdome. And then there was a close call back in 2009 when Sham topped off afternoon services on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year which comes 10 days after the start of the Jewish New Year, with a 20 air-mile plane ride from nearby Dallas Love Field to Arlington Municipal Airport down the street from AT&T Stadium. In the hopes of ensuring Sham’s prompt arrival as a Monday afternoon rush hour melted into evening, a fellow Emanu-el congregant gave Sham the lift in his plane.
