More than 500,000 customers were without power early Wednesday as powerful rain and winds swept across parts of the Midwest.

Michigan had the most customer outages at 265,710, while 165,953 customers in Wisconsin and 147,538 in Illinois had lost power, according to PowerOutage.US. Scenes of damage were reported across the region.Video from CNN affiliate WTMJ showed trees knocked on the ground in Milwaukee and dark clouds hovering over the city. Some trees have fallen on cars and in the middle of roads, video shows. The Milwaukee Fire Department warned residents to stay away from downed wires hanging off buildings.

"Just came out of the middle of nowhere," resident Matt Till told CNN affiliate WLS."Six-thirty, family, we're finishing up with dinner, and the sky gets real dark, you hear a little bit of thunder, and the next thing you know it, the winds hit.
