The seasonal virus is spiking early this year in conjunction with increasing COVID-19 cases, and officials are worried the dual stress on the state’s hospital system will “rival some of the hardest moments of the pandemic.” Dr. Mark Ghaly, California’s health and human services secretary, said during a Tuesday press briefing:
“These curves are getting steeper each week around flu, COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses. Taken separately, these infections are manageable, but when all come together the difficulty posed to the system is pretty extreme.”
