The Kane County Health Department is urging an increased number of Elgin families living in older homes with possible lead plumbing and lead-based paint to have their children tested for high lead levels. “This year, the IDPH expanded the number of Zip codes for lead reporting so it was important for us to get the word out to the public,” Kane County Health Department Director of Health Protection Uche Onwuta said.
“I highly recommend it to my patients.” The blood test, which consists of a small prick on the finger, is covered by insurance, she said. If lead levels are high, there is a therapy involving things like vitamin C that helps reduce the levels, Prabhakar Parikh said. There is also medication that helps with lead absorption, she said. Kane County Health Department officials automatically get notification if a child tests positive and will have a nurse reach out to the child’s family, Onwuta said.
