The floors are concrete for obvious reasons — it stands up to dog hair, slobber and animal messes — and some of it was completed with a speckled black-gray-white epoxy finish. Mike Enmon — a diehard Aggie — likes to point out that it's the same epoxy finish they use at Kyle Field, the football stadium where he and Kari take rare breaks from the dog ranch to watch Texas A&M University football games.
The lobby's vaulted ceiling is a great backdrop for a beautiful chandelier and the big beams — Douglas Fir Glulam beams, a sturdy glued laminated timber product — that span the room. While many pet owners think about materials and colors that will hide animal hair and pet stains, Mike took the opposite approach, making everything white so everyone can see how clean the place is.
The wings lined with dog rooms have a long cinder block planter that runs down the center, designed so that the dogs can't see each other across the building. It helps keep the barking down and brings a little nature indoors, too. Their pets at home are two retired competitors, Paul and Jock, who get along with the couple's cat, Munchkin, a stray who showed up at Kickapoo several years ago. Hard-working Mike gave her a job as the resident mouser; he compliments the tabby on her ferocious hunting skills.
