Will Jawando, a councilman from Montgomery County, has abandoned a long-shot campaign to be the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate.
Montgomery County Council member Will Jawando is no longer seeking the Democratic nomination to succeed Sen. Ben Cardin , who is retiring. Montgomery County Council Member Will Jawando dropped out of Maryland’s competitive U.S. Senate race Thursday, narrowing the Democratic field for the rare, open seat to a battle largely between Rep. David Trone and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks.
Jawando posted a lackluster fundraising quarter on Sunday, trailing behind Alsobrooks, who has shored up support from many of Maryland’s top Democrats. Trone has put nearly $10 million of his personal fortune behind his campaign so far. Political analysts viewed Jawando’s candidacy as a long shot against better positioned rivals, but the second-term councilman cast his bid as a way to consolidate Maryland’s influential liberal wing. He noted he now represents 1 million of the state’s roughly 6 million residents and vowed he would have the resources to win.
