Former Carmel High outfielder and Tampa Bay Rays first base coach Chris Prieto was a part of history after the team opened the year with 13 straight wins.
CINCINNATI – With each win, no one raised a toast. Oh, the music was a little louder in the Tampa Bay clubhouse, as players turned pressure into excitement.
Prieto, who reached the majors as a player in 2005 with the Angels, is in his second year as the Rays first base coach after a three-year stint in Seattle. “The clubhouse vibe was good,” Prieto said. “You’re winning. We all knew what was going on. It does become something in the back of your mind. I mean the media is letting you know.”
What followed was a return home after sweeping the Nationals, and taking three from Oakland, in which Tampa erupted for 31 runs in three games, while posting a pair of shutouts.
