“Shots or no shots, the city was in panic,' one Harrisburg mom said of the mass hysteria at the fireworks and food truck festival. “My children will never be the same.'
The screams started suddenly and sounded like pure terror in downtown Harrisburg Monday night.
The women laid on top of the children who were crying, and asking whether they were going to die. The men stood guard as people fled all around them. At one point, Feldmann decided they too would run, but her mother fell down and nearly got trampled so they again decided to shelter in place. She didn’t want her children to see her upset, but she was overcome with feelings of helplessness and fear: first of the mass hysteria and later of the thought of an active shooter in her hometown.
Her son was bawling, saying ‘he didn’t want to die,” she said. “This was honestly one of the most traumatic things to ever happen to us. The pure chaos and fear… the rush of people with no regard for others.”“I don’t want to raise my children to live in fear,” she said. “All we can do is learn from the scary moment, and always be aware of our surroundings.
“At this point, it doesn’t matter if there wasn’t a shooting,” Feldmann said. “That’s not the issue. It was the fear and terror and running and not knowing what was happening.” Reimer said his teenage daughter was at the fireworks display and was pretty shaken up by the ordeal.
