We chat with ALeagueOfTheirOwn stars Molly Ephraim & Saidah Arrika Ekulona about their characters' unique stories in PrimeVideo's new series, premiering tomorrow!
Prime Video's A League of Their Own takes inspiration from Penny Marshall's 1992 movie of the same name in its wide-spanning narrative covering the true story of the Rockford Peaches, who played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League from 1943-1954. The TV series created by Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham explores the successes and struggles of women in sports during the World War II era with an emphasis on the experiences of Black and LGBTQ+ women.
Molly Ephraim: I dug deep within the depths of my soul and imagined what it would be like to love hot dogs, beer, being loud, boisterous, sassy. I didn't have to do that much. My character's based loosely on Maybelle Blair, who is sort of the belle of the ball right now at 95 years old, is still sharp as a tack and sassy as all get-out. I just tried to inhabit a little bit of her joie de vivre.
It’s nice to see a show that centers women, and such a diverse group of women. For both of you, how did it feel to work on a show like this that can make so many women feel seen? In what ways do you hope that this series carries on the legacy of the original movie 30 years later?
