Padres lose at least seven games, as lockout forces delay of spring schedule
Major League Baseball never officially announced a delay to the start of spring training workouts, a scheduled date that passed this week.
But the league did on Friday make official what was already expected when it announced that spring training games will begin no earlier than March 5.The league, which instituted a lockout of players on Dec. 1 after the collective bargaining agreement between MLB and its players’ union expired, has reportedly set a Feb. 28 deadline for a new agreement to be reached in order for the season to begin on time.
Players and owners are at odds over myriad economic issues. Players are primarily seeking better compensation for younger players and rules to enhance the likelihood more teams field competitive teams.
