The Wave Sky Waveknit 3 is a highly-cushioned, but firm, neutral daily trainer with impressive durability.
Mizuno rolled out a tsunami of new tech for this latest release in its Wave series. The Sky 3 showcases the brand’s completely redesigned midsole, which swaps the longtime classic Pebax plate for two layers of foam in the shape of a wave. The shoe also debuts a never-before-seen foam from Mizuno, called XPOP, that reminds us a bit of bouncy, soft midsoles like the Adidas Boost.
“These shoes felt like slippers with extra cushion to support all [my] problem spots, such as the arches and heels,” one tester said. “I was comfortable on my longer runs and excited that I didn’t have the heel or arch pain I will sometimes experience. The extra cushioning did not weigh the shoe down or hinder any of my runs whether it was speedwork, a casual run, or a hilly workout.”
The Sky 3 is also one of the first pairs to don the more flexible Waveknit upper, which stretches better in the toe box than the 2’s air mesh, while retaining a snug fit through the midfoot. Paired with a new premium sockliner that trims bulky ankle cushioning, this latest model is more streamlined for a ride that’s smooth like the motion of the ocean. The Sky 3’s midsole gets a total overhaul with the Foam Wave. This new platform uses two layers of copolymer foams called U4icX and U4ic .
So how does all this fresh tech feel on the run? According to our testers, who gave the shoe’s ride an average rating of 5.3 out of 7, it’s pretty great. “The forefoot cushioning was comfortable, dispersive, and responsive. I’ve been doing a lot more road work than in the past because the midsole [has] minimized the sense of pounding my joints,” one tester said. “I’ve returned from some long runs in these Mizunos expecting to feel sore the next day—but never paid that price.
