In a public letter, MIT President Rafael Reif stands up for Chinese and Chinese-American colleagues and students who he says feel 'unfairly scrutinized' amid rising tensions over academic espionage. (WBUR)

headlined"Racial Profiling Harms Science" from three groups of Chinese and Chinese-American researchers.

"These developments have led to confusion, fear, and frustration among these highly dedicated professionals, who are in danger of being singled out for scapegoating, stereotyping, and racial profiling," the groups' letter says.that they appreciate the groups' concerns and greatly value researchers of Chinese descent.

But the NIH response also refers to unspecified instances which the agency says violated"the honor-based systems and practices of the American research enterprise." "NIH is committed to avoiding overreaction, stigmatization, harassment, and profiling," the response concludes."We will use our influence and bully pulpit as necessary to speak out against such prejudicial actions, for which there is no place in the biomedical research community."
