Early exit polls suggest that the Democratic voter pool this year is older and less liberal than in the 2016 presidential primaries—and therefore less receptive to Mr. Sanders's candidacy.
The shift toward an older and less-liberal electorate appeared in most of the states that voted earlier this year, exit polls published by various news organizations showed. It has shown up again tonight in Missouri and Mississippi, the two states that Mr. Biden is projected to have won so far. In both states, the share of voters under age 30 has declined when compared with the 2016 electorate, while the share of seniors has risen.
Similarly, the share of voters in both states who call themselves liberals has declined, while those calling themselves moderates or conservatives has grown. Those changes suggest that the Democratic voter pool has changed in ways helpful to Mr. Biden rather than to Mr. Sanders, who counts young voters and those calling themselves "very liberal'' as core supporters.
We'll see if the trends hold in Michigan, for which media organizations have not yet published exit polls.
