Gerbier, a French national, was a pilot for Air France. He had been on the airline’s Paris-to-Los Angeles flight on Monday and had driven directly to the Lone Pine area for an early start on his hike Tuesday, anGerbier reportedly planned to reach Whitney’s 14,505-foot summit by the Mountaineer’s Route, shorter by mileage but steeper and more challenging than the trail.
