An unavoidable byproduct of A.J.

Preller’s trading the last few years: The Padres’ best remaining prospects are on the younger side and figure to begin 2023 at the lower levels.

That’s the case for Double-A San Antonio, which features just three prospects in MLB.com’s top-30 ranking of the organization, none inside the top-10 and just two players younger than 23 years old. In contrast, the Missions’ roster consists of 16 players signed to minor league deals over the last two years and 11 players who are 27 or older. At No. 13, outfielder Korry Howell is San Antonio’s top-ranked prospect. The 24-year-old paired six homers with an .876 OPS over 48 games before a wrist injury ended his 2022 campaign. Howell was acquired in the deal that sent Victor Caratini to the Brewers.

Left-hander Jackson Wolf is ranked No. 16 and outfielder Tirso Ornelas is ranked No. 28. Both also spent time with the Missions in 2022, with the 23-year-old Wolf allowing 10 runs in 10 2/3 innings after his promotion from high Single-A Fort Wayne and Ornelas slugging .408 over 112 games before playing his final three games at Triple-A El Paso.
