Prospects James Wood, Jackson Merrill beginning their full-season careers at low Single-A Lake Elsinore; Robert Hassell III headed to Fort Wayne TinCaps to start 2022
The Padres on Saturday set the rosters for their three lowest affiliates. Among the highlights is outfielder Robert Hassell III returning to high Single-A Fort Wayne to start 2022 and the Padres’ top picks from last year’s draft — Jackson Merrill and James Wood — starting the year at low Single-A Lake Elsinore to begin their first full seasons in professional baseball.
Hassell, 20, is ranked No. 3 in the Padres system by MLB.com and No. 42 in its top-100 after hitting .302/.393/.470 while rising from Lake Elsinore to Fort Wayne last year. Wood is ranked No. 5 in the Padres system after signing as a second-rounder last year. Merrill, ranked No. 6, was the Padres’ first-round pick.
The Padres’ other top-100 prospects — CJ Abrams , Luis Campusano and MacKenzie Gore — remain in big-league camp and will either make the Padres or begin the season at Triple-A El Paso, which opens its season Tuesday.Double-A San Antonio, high Single-A Fort Wayne and low Single-A Lake Elsinore all begin April 8.Michael Cantu, Yorman Rodriguez, Chandler Seagle.Jorge Oña , Tirso Ornelas , Robbie Podorsky, Agustin Ruiz , Esteury Ruiz.
