The Padres moved center fielders Jakob Marsee, Samuel Zavala and Dillon Head up a level this weekend
All three are ranked among MLB.com’s top-30 Padres prospects, with the 18-year-old Head debuting at No. 8 after the Padres drafted him in the first round last month. Zavala is ranked No. 5 in the system and No. 100 in MLB.com’s overall list and Marsee has jumped to No. 12 in the organizational top-30 after opening eyes as last year’s sixth-round pick out of Central Michigan.
The power spike pushed Marsee’ batting line to .273/.414/.425 in 113 games before a promotion to San Antonio, where he is 3-for-10 with four walks and two steals through three games in the Texas League. The left-handed-hitting Zavala, 19, is still looking for his first Fort Wayne hit, but finally staying on the field — a leg injury delayed him at the start of 2022 and a broken hamate ended his season in the playoffs — is allowing him to showcase the power/speed combo that led the Padres to sign him for $1.2 million as a one of their prizes in the 2021 international class.
