EU foreign ministers have said a ‘complete clear-up’ of the European parliament is needed over claims World Cup host Qatar bribed MEPs with bags of cash.
The alarmed politicians called for a full investigation as one of the suspects, Greece’s Eva Kaili, had her assets frozen by her country’s government.
The ex-TV presenter, now suspended by the socialist Pasok party, met Qatar’s labour minister Ali bin Samikh Al Marri on October 31. In a clip tweeted by the state-run Qatar News Agency, she said: ‘I believe the World Cup for Arabs has been a great tool for… political transformation and reforms.’ She later said in a speech at the European parliament: ‘Today, the World Cup in Qatar is proof… of how sports diplomacy can achieve a historical transformation of a country.’Ms Kaili, 44, was one of four people held in Belgium over the weekend after prosecutors searched 16 houses and seized €600,000 . They have been charged with ‘participation in a criminal organisation, money laundering and corruption’.
‘This is an unbelievable incident which has to be cleared up completely with the full force of law,’ said German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock as she arrived for a regular meeting with her EU counterparts in Brussels. ‘This is about the credibility of Europe.’
