Published 12:20 AM EST Nov 7, 2019MILWAUKEE – A 61-year-old Milwaukee man was charged Wednesday with a hate crime in Friday's acid attack on a Hispanic man outside a south side restaurant.In Wisconsin,"hate crime" refers to extra punishment that can be imposed on someone convicted of a crime when the victim was targeted based on race, religion, color, disability, sexual orientation, national origin or ancestry.
Villalaz, a U.S. citizen who emigrated from Peru, said Blackwell called him an"illegal" and told him to"go back, go back ." Blackwell, 61, had been arrested on a preliminary charge of aggravated battery after 42-year-old Mahud Villalaz said Blackwell threw acid on his face after a series of anti-immigrant remarks that Villalaz finally countered by saying he is a U.S. citizen.
"Nobody should be the subject of violence as the result of their national origin, race or color," he said."When violence is based on just hate of someone ... then violence can become so random as to threaten us all."
