A month after the Milpitas City Council opted not to renew City Manager Steve McHarris’ contract, the city has yet to start a search for his replacement, prompting concerns about who will run the city come June.after briefly serving as interim city manager, is the third city manager the council has gone through since 2017. The city has been plagued by staff turnover in recent years.

No reason was given for the decision, and Montano declined to comment on her reasoning, referring the Mercury News to the city attorney. Chua and Barbadillo could not be reached for comment. Phan and Lien said they are troubled by the decision and neither has heard of any plans to start a search for his replacement. City spokesperson Charmaine Angelo confirmed the city has received no direction from council on hiring a new city manager.

Lien, who was elected in November, said she was “disturbed” by the decision and has received “numerous calls from the community asking for or demanding for answers and demanding transparency.” She believes McHarris is the right person for the job.
